Plan around thunder before reaching the trailhead

A shelter decision belongs in the itinerary, not in a hurried debate outdoors.

Name an actual shelter

The National Weather Service identifies a substantial building or enclosed vehicle as appropriate lightning shelter; an open picnic shelter is not equivalent. Before an outing with thunderstorm potential, identify what suitable shelter is actually available. Do not write “shelter nearby” without naming it and understanding access. A tent, a tree or an attractive roof on a map should not become a plan through wishful thinking. Check the official guidance for the setting and choose your day accordingly.

Account for the journey back

Trace the route from the farthest intended point to the shelter. Consider the whole group and the terrain instead of imagining a quick return by the strongest walker. If the plan only works when you move faster than your normal pace, shorten or postpone it. Arrange for everyone to understand the decision before departure. A shared early return is much easier to make when the day has not been sold as a promise to reach one particular viewpoint.

Treat the pause as part of the plan

NWS guidance says to wait thirty minutes after the last thunder before resuming outdoor activity. Build room for that interruption, or accept that the outing may be over. Keep the return contact informed when it is safe and practical to do so. Afterward, review whether your chosen route genuinely allowed the shelter plan to work. The lesson is not how close you came to finishing before the storm. It is whether the itinerary made a timely, straightforward decision possible.
