Natural objects do not need to become route markers

Keep your private route notes clear without building signs into the landscape.

Distinguish a marker from your interpretation

A pile of stones or a tied ribbon may look intentional without having any reliable meaning for your route. Leave No Trace advises against building cairns and other structures. Do not add your own marker because a junction feels confusing. Instead, record the uncertainty and use an appropriate established route or turn back. A private meaning attached to an object cannot tell another visitor where the route goes or whether the indicated ground is lawful to enter.

Improve the note at home

Write down what confused you: a missing sign, several visible paths or a mismatch between your map and the ground. Consult the responsible land manager’s route information before the next outing. If a sign appears damaged, report it through the appropriate channel rather than repairing or replacing it yourself. Include a clear location and a factual description. Avoid public directions based on an unofficial marker whose origin and purpose you have not established.

Practise recognition without alteration

On a short familiar route, describe junctions through established features and the sequence of the path. Use photographs and a private sketch where appropriate. Keep any practice within your navigation ability and do not rely on it for remote travel until you have the necessary skills. The exercise should leave the route physically unchanged. Better attention and clearer information are portable improvements; a handmade marker is a new object whose consequences continue after you have gone home.
